Created by Serge Danot in 1965, The Magic Roundabout became a television legend. The five minute slot just before the evening news guaranteed the programme a viewing figure of over eight million. Its laid-back and surreal view of life afforded the programme a heady sixties feel, thereby assuring it cult status.
There is a world far away from ours...The Clangers were first shown on television in 1969, the year Man landed on the Moon. They were described by a NASA scientist as "an attempt to bring a note of realism to the fantasy of the space race".The combined talents of Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin brought us these unforgettable characters with their mouse-like features and their loveable personalities who lived in a world where music grows and trees, soup is dispensed by a dragon and froglets perform magic tricks.
"Bagpuss, dear Bagpuss,Old fat furry cat-puss;Wake up and look atthis thing that I bring.Wake up, be bright,Be golden and light;Bagpuss,O hear what I sing!"
Like the Magic Roundabout, The Herbs feature a cast of colourful and eccentric characters which includes a hyperactive dog called Dill, the very officious Constable Knapweed, a bad tempered owl Sage and Bayleaf the fastidious gardener to name but a few. They spend their days inside a walled garden, which can only be entered through a wooden door, by using the magic word! To join The Herbs in their garden and to start collecting you must first utter aloud the word... 'Herbidacious'..
